Fitness Tip: Count Your Steps

Here is an added benefit to subscribing to my blog: you will get fitness tips from me from time to time (since I am a Pilates and Spinning trainer.)

My first tip of 2008 has to do with just getting up and getting moving. I stumbled upon this website called Walker Tracker and thought it had a neat incentive to get you to get moving.

Yes, pedometers and step counting isn't really a new trend, but this website offers a widget (or gadget) to go on your desktop or your blog to show how many steps you have taken in a certain time period.

All you have to do is wear the pedometer and then log your steps into the website. The widget will update for you, and you (and everyone else) can see how well you have done.

This is great even if you don't have time to do traditional workouts. Just wear the pedometer all day and it will show you how active you are. Then you can take steps (yeah, bad pun there) to increase your movement during the day. Can you improve 100 steps per day for a week? Or can you walk twice as far tomorrow? You can even compete with friends, family or a made-up character from Walker Tracker's website.

The pedometer also works if you are on the treadmill, which is a more traditional way of exercising. But exercise is good even if it is just walking further from the car to the ice cream shop! Seriously, a lot of our weight and health issues come from being too sendentary. It may not be 90% heart rate exercise, but movement of any kind is a start to a healthier you!

Exercise shouldn't kill you...in fact it is supposed to do just the opposite...keep you healthier and allow you to live longer. If you have trouble getting up and taking that first step, start with something like this. Almost all fitness levels can participate. However, always talk to your doctor before you decide to start a new exercise program.

Remember: broaden your horizons! Try something new this year!
